BOXING DAY RACES 2007
Review Submitted by: Mark Latham
A sun-drenched crowd of over 15,000 people
flocked to Broadmeadow racetrack today to
celebrate Boxing Day. Gates officially opened at 11am and the people
began to roll in. Many already drunk and staggering for what would be a
long day ahead of most. A seven-race card sponsored by J &
M Spero was the feature for the day
The
races brought in many different types of novocastians, with many guys
donning suits, smart dress clothes or dressing up as Russian tourists.
But the girls weren’t going to be outdone by their counterparts by being
dressed in their finest dresses and attires.
The
day was full of fun and events with live bands playing around the venue.
The King St Hotel also had its own marquee with a dance floor and some
of Newcastle’s finest DJ’s banging it up with all the latest tunes.
The
lines for alcohol were moderate and the NJC handled the crowd well,
drink prices were average and the food was quite nice. An enjoyable day
at the races was assured with plenty boys in blue keeping the peace and
minimal violence occurred.
Whether
you left Broadmeadow today, with a pocket full
of cash, or scurrying for the ATM for bus fare home. It is very hard not
to enjoy a great day at the races, with beautiful weather, some good
mates, some alcoholic fuelled fun and the chance and risk of winning and
those who didn’t have a bet. There is always next year
